Robotham cleverly uses a fish bowl story to encapsulate this character’s effect on others. Slightly implausibly, she attended the same secondary school as Phil and comes with enough emotional baggage for a world tour. There’s an interesting cast of minor characters in this story, none more intriguing than Tempe Brown, a needy strange woman, who Phil befriends. By arresting him, McCarthy makes powerful enemies in the Police and her troubles escalate from there on. Goodall tries throwing his weight around but comes off second-best to McCarthy, who happens to have a black belt in karate. We meet him early on when PC McCarthy and her partner PC Anisha Kohli are called to a unit where Goodall has bashed his mistress, Tempe Brown. The theme that runs through the book is domestic violence and the main villain is a decorated detective named Darren Goodall. Her name is Philomena (Phil) McCarthy and she is the estranged daughter of a gangster. The writer has set another story in London, this time with a young, female policewoman as the central character. Michael Robotham’s latest thriller is a roller-coaster ride of suspense and plot twists. ![]()
